In brief

The woodworking training program offers an industry-integrated curriculum that is based on Switzerland’s dual vocational training system and combines practical training with academic learning.

Students gain expertise in the manufacture of furniture, interiors, cabinets, tables and fitted kitchens. This approach ensures that graduates are well prepared and ready for a career in woodworking.

Among other things, the following content is taught during the training:

Materials science, design, working with modern standard machines, CAD — 3D drawing, CNC basics, personal development and entrepreneurship.

Goals

  • Woodworking with hand tools and hand-held machines
  • This course provides practical training in woodworking using hand tools and portable machines. Graduates acquire skills in reading technical drawings, making wood joints, using machines safely and carrying out independent woodworking projects.
  • CNC machinist in the furniture industry
  • This short course trains participants in the operation and programming of CNC machines specifically for woodworking. Graduates gain practical experience in CNC production and acquire the ability to process wood precisely and efficiently.
  • Foreman in furniture production
  • This short course provides experienced furniture makers with the technical, business and leadership skills to efficiently manage workshop operations and lead production teams. Graduates will be able to plan projects, allocate resources, enforce safety protocols and supervise teams to ensure high quality production in a professional furniture manufacturing environment.
  • Product development and design with Auto-CAD
  • This short course provides participants with basic knowledge of AutoCAD for the creation of furniture-specific drawings. Participants will gain practical experience in the areas of 2D drawing, isometric drawing, 3D modeling and production drawings and thus acquire knowledge in furniture design.
  • Product development and design with PYTHA
  • This short course teaches participants how to use Pytha software to create furniture-specific drawings and provides hands-on experience in 3D modeling, creating parts lists and creating detailed production drawings.

Career opportunities

Carpentry skills are needed in the private sector, in industry, in construction and in many other areas. The carpentry training at BSDU enables students to carry out the work professionally, giving them the opportunity to gain a foothold in a number of areas. Whether as cabinet makers, carpenters or designers — all doors are open to our students. In the future, there is the possibility that the profession will be supplemented with plastics work.
